Before labor the cervix should remain closed. As labor approaches it will start to dilate. This process can happen over weeks or within hours.

It`s rare for the cervix to dilate very fast, though possible. If you think you are dilating or if you physician sees that you are, more than likely, you will be seen weekly until birth.
